More generally, should higher education aim to transform the desires of students or merely improve the ability of students to satisfy these desires?

"Crossing Genres: Highlights from Denison's Creative Writing Program"
~ Dr. Margot Singer & the Creative Writing Department

One of the strengths of Denison's creative writing program is that we work with writers from multiple genres and encourage writers to challenge themselves in genres outside of their comfort zone. The goal is to listen to the work and let it tell us what form it needs to take. In this panel, current students and teachers from Denison's creative writing program will talk about how they listen to their work and the tricks they use to discover the potential in that work.

Science Summer Research Presentation ~  The Importance of Morphology in Determing Anuran Jumping Performance ~ Maggie Jones '16 (Elkins, WV/Biology and English Creative Writing) and Dr. Geoff Smith (Biology)
As an ecologist, Dr. Smith's research broadly centers on understanding how organisms interact with their environment. At Denison, his research has been primarily focused on how human alterations of the environment affect amphibian and aquatic communities. In particular, he is interested in understanding how an invasive fish, the Western Mosquitofish, impacts local pond communities, especially the amphibians. In this presentation, Dr. Smith and Maggie Jones will explore the results of recent experiments investigating the issue.

Humanities Summer Research Presentation ~ The Forgotten: Life after Death Row for the Wrongly Convicted ~ Lisa Torio '15 (Tokyo, Japan/Philosophy and Political Science) and Dr. Jack Shuler (English)
Since 1973, 144 Americans have been wrongfully convicted and later exonerated due to eyewitness misidentification, forced confessions, poor public defense council, prosecutorial misconduct, and racism. However, many of these exonerees rarely receive state compensation and continue to live with the impacts of death row. The goal of this project is to shed light on the issue of wrongful conviction through the anecdotal accounts of four death row survivors across the country. The stories are based on phone/e-mail interviews and newspaper articles related to their cases.
